Chapter 53 - Blueprints Beneath the Renovation
The facilities department delivered every architectural drawing related to the headquarters renovation that had erased Office 7C from the building.
Margaret spread the blueprints across a long conference table.
Each renovation phase appeared ordinary.
Walls moved.
Storage rooms expanded.
Conference spaces were modernized.
Nothing immediately explained why an entire executive office had vanished from the records.
Then one structural engineer noticed a discrepancy.
"The measurements don't match."
Arthur stepped closer.
"What do you mean?"
"The renovation report says this hallway was widened by two meters."
He measured the original drawing against the revised one.
"It wasn't."
Silence filled the room.
"If the hallway wasn't expanded..."
Margaret finished his thought.
"...then something else occupies that space."
The facilities director compared electrical diagrams.
Another anomaly appeared.
Power continued flowing to an area that officially no longer existed.
The wiring had been maintained for nearly twenty years.
Arthur stared at the schematic.
"We've been paying electricity for a room that supposedly disappeared?"
"Apparently."
Margaret looked toward the legal counsel.
"I want physical access."
Within an hour, maintenance crews removed decorative wall panels installed during the renovation.
Behind them stood an older concrete wall.
One section sounded hollow.
Nobody spoke.
For the first time, the investigation wasn't following documents.
