Chapter 55 - The Cabinet Without a Key
Against the far wall stood six filing cabinets.
Five opened normally.
The sixth remained locked.
Unlike the others, its label had been deliberately removed.
Investigators inventoried the unlocked cabinets first.
Meeting agendas.
Training schedules.
Budget drafts.
Everything appeared incomplete.
Almost every folder ended just before important decisions were made.
Margaret frowned.
"They preserved the routine paperwork."
She looked toward the locked cabinet.
"But protected something else."
A locksmith examined the mechanism.
"This isn't a standard office lock."
"It's custom."
Arthur looked surprised.
"Custom for what purpose?"
"So only one master key would exist."
No key had been found.
The forensic team chose not to force it open immediately.
Instead, they scanned the cabinet using portable imaging equipment.
The room fell silent as the first internal outlines appeared.
Rows of document folders.
Several magnetic tapes.
A small fireproof lockbox.
And beneath them...
what appeared to be dozens of personnel files arranged alphabetically.
Margaret studied the scan without speaking.
Samuel Pierce stepped closer.
"I think I know what those are."
"What?"
"The people who were never supposed to become leaders."
Nobody answered.
If Samuel was right, the forgotten cabinet might contain not the records of those who had been promoted—
but the records of those who had quietly been prevented from ever reaching the positions they had earned.
Margaret looked once more at the unopened cabinet.
