Chapter 62 - The Hidden Chamber

Dawn had barely broken when the excavation team returned to the concrete wall beneath headquarters. Overnight, every legal authorization had been secured. Arthur Vance insisted that nothing inside the concealed space be disturbed without complete documentation.
Engineers first drilled a tiny inspection hole.
A fiber-optic camera slipped through the opening.
For several seconds, the monitor displayed only darkness.
Then the image sharpened.
Shelving.
Metal cabinets.
A long wooden conference table.
The room was intact.
No signs of flooding.
No structural damage.
Most astonishing of all, a small emergency indicator near the ceiling still glowed faintly green.
"There is still electrical power," whispered the facilities engineer.
Arthur stared at the screen.
"After twenty years?"
The engineer nodded.
"Someone maintained this circuit."
The heavy wall was removed section by section.
As dust settled, the concealed chamber revealed itself.
Unlike Office 7C, this room felt deliberate.
There were no decorations.
No company logos.
Only function.
One wall displayed maps connecting every regional office opened over the past twenty years.
Colored strings linked offices to handwritten notes.
Promotion cycles.
Executive transfers.
Leadership workshops.
Succession reviews.
Margaret slowly approached the largest board.
Across the top, someone had written:
Leadership is a process, not an event.
Beneath that sentence were dozens of names.
Some had become CEOs.
Some had resigned unexpectedly.
Others had disappeared from company history altogether.
Arthur recognized several immediately.
"I hired these people."
Margaret quietly replied,
"Perhaps."
She touched one faded note.
"But someone else may have decided where they would eventually stand."
The investigation had uncovered something far more sophisticated than hidden correspondence.
It had uncovered a planning room.

A place where careers appeared to have been studied years before they unfolded.
