Chapter 45 - The Missing Attendee
Samuel Pierce spent the afternoon reviewing enlarged photographs from the leadership conference.
He examined every face repeatedly.
Finally, he stopped.
"Someone's missing."
Margaret looked at the photograph.
"What do you mean?"
"There were thirty-one participants."
She counted again.
Only thirty.
Arthur checked the official attendance register.
Thirty-one names.
The photograph showed only thirty people.
One participant had been removed before the image entered the company archive.
The imaging specialist enhanced the background.
Near the edge of the original negative, faint shadows revealed where another person had once stood.
The removal had been deliberate.
Not accidental.
Margaret compared the missing position with Harold's handwritten seating diagram recovered from Room Twelve.
The unidentified attendee had been standing directly beside Evelyn Kensington.
Arthur looked increasingly concerned.
"So someone altered the historical record."
Margaret nodded.
"And they knew exactly which person needed to disappear."
The legal counsel quietly added another note.
"If one photograph was edited..."
"...others may have been edited too," Margaret finished.
The investigation expanded once again.
Now they were no longer searching only for hidden documents.
