Chapter 88 - The Third Volume

Volume III proved different from the first two.

Its pages contained handwritten journal entries rather than structured principles.

The first line immediately captured everyone's attention.

> Influence is strongest when nobody believes it exists.

Margaret turned another page.

The journal described conversations with founders who feared their companies would lose their values after retirement.

Some accepted advice.

Some refused it.

Some misunderstood it completely.

Unlike the earlier volumes, the writer openly questioned his own methods.

One passage had been heavily underlined.

> I taught succession.

> Others began teaching selection.

> That was never my intention.

Arthur looked up sharply.

"What does that mean?"

Judge Walsh continued reading.

Another entry answered the question.

> My students improved the framework until they believed they could predict leadership.

> They forgot that character cannot be engineered.

Samuel closed the book slowly.

"So the system changed."

Margaret nodded.

"Or perhaps..."

She paused.

"...someone changed the teacher's ideas after the teacher was gone."

Near the back of the journal lay a sealed envelope addressed not to Arthur...

Not to Harold...

Not to Margaret...

But simply:

To whoever finally discovers all three volumes.

No one reached for it immediately.

For the first time since the investigation began, everyone understood that they were no longer merely uncovering hidden history.

They were approaching the moment where the original architect's intentions and the system that survived him might finally separate into two very different stories.

And somewhere beyond the silent cemetery, someone who had visited the nameless grave only a day earlier was almost certainly waiting to learn whether the envelope would be opened.
