Chapter 58 - The Name in Red
Late that evening, another breakthrough arrived from the digital forensics laboratory.
One analyst had successfully reconstructed fragments of a corrupted backup tape recovered from Office 7C.
Most of the files were unreadable.
One database survived.
Only partially.
The recovered records contained employee identification numbers without names.
Then the analyst cross-referenced them with archived payroll data.
One identification number immediately matched.
Harold Bennett.
Margaret leaned closer.
"What classification?"
The analyst hesitated before answering.
He enlarged the final column.
Instead of the usual symbols, Harold's record carried a handwritten annotation.
Category R
Arthur asked quietly,
"What does R mean?"
No one knew.
The analyst continued restoring additional records.
Minutes later another Category R appeared.
Samuel Pierce.
Then another.
Linda Brooks.
Then, unexpectedly...
Margaret Hale.
The room froze.
Arthur looked at Margaret.
"That's impossible."
Margaret had never worked for Vance Dynamics twenty years earlier.
Yet her name—or at least her professional profile—had somehow appeared in a system that officially ceased operating long before she entered the company.
Margaret examined the incomplete record several times.
Something was wrong.
Either the restored database had been updated years after Office 7C supposedly closed...
...or someone had continued using its evaluation methods long after everyone believed the office had disappeared.
Margaret slowly closed her notebook.
"For weeks we've assumed Office 7C became inactive."
She looked around the room.
"I no longer believe that."
Outside, the headquarters stood quiet beneath the night sky.
Inside the forgotten office, every new discovery suggested the same unsettling possibility:
