Chapter 94 - The Original Manuscript

Mercer unlocked a climate-controlled cabinet hidden behind an ordinary bookshelf.
Unlike the blue velvet cases, this cabinet contained loose handwritten pages tied together with faded linen ribbon.
"This," he said quietly,
"is older than all three volumes."
Margaret carefully unfolded the first page.
Across the top appeared a simple title.
Notes on Stewardship
No compass symbol.
No mysterious insignia.
Only neat fountain-pen handwriting.
The earliest pages argued that organizations should deliberately preserve institutional wisdom by encouraging experienced leaders to mentor younger generations.
Arthur smiled faintly.
"There's nothing manipulative here."
"Exactly," Mercer replied.
"The original work celebrated dialogue."
As Margaret continued reading, she noticed something extraordinary.
Entire paragraphs from Volume I had originated here.
But in the later versions...
Certain words had been changed.
"Mentorship" became "selection."
"Guidance" became "alignment."
"Character" became "adaptability."
Single-word substitutions gradually altered the meaning of entire chapters.
Judge Walsh looked astonished.
"Someone edited philosophy the way an accountant edits numbers."
Mercer nodded.
"And small revisions accumulated over decades."
Olivia quietly compared the manuscripts side by side.
By themselves, each change appeared insignificant.
Together, they transformed stewardship into control.
Margaret closed the manuscript carefully.
"We've been investigating who built the system."
Mercer looked directly at her.
May you like
"You should now investigate who edited the language."
