Chapter 35 - The Conference That Changed Everything
Margaret requested every available record related to the Executive Leadership Forum. The name appeared only a handful of times throughout Vance Dynamics' archives, yet each appearance coincided with a major shift in hiring philosophy or executive promotions.
Most records had been destroyed under routine retention policies.
A few remained.
Among them was a travel reimbursement ledger from nineteen years earlier.
The accounting entries looked ordinary until Margaret noticed something unusual.
Every executive who attended the conference had their expenses approved by the same temporary project account.
The account itself had no department attached to it.
No cost center.
No sponsor.
Only a project code.
Arthur frowned as he studied the ledger.
"I've approved thousands of budgets over the years."
He shook his head slowly.
"I've never seen this project."
Margaret handed the document to the forensic accountant.
"Trace every payment."
The accountant spent nearly an hour comparing archived banking records before looking up.
"The money didn't originate from Vance Dynamics."
The room became silent.
"Then where did it come from?" Arthur asked.
The accountant enlarged one faded banking reference.
"The payments were reimbursed through an external leadership foundation."
Margaret wrote the organization's name into her notebook.
She had never heard of it.
Neither had anyone else in the room.
Yet over the next several hours they discovered the same foundation had quietly sponsored executives from several competing corporations during the same period.
It was no longer just a company investigation.
Someone had been influencing leadership development across multiple organizations.
Margaret closed the file.
"We've just crossed a very important line."
