Chapter 36 - Linda Receives an Unexpected Call
While investigators searched through decades of records, life inside the regional office continued.
Linda Brooks arrived before sunrise as she always had.
She unlocked her desk, organized customer files, and prepared for another busy day.
Nothing seemed different.
Until her phone rang.
"Linda Brooks speaking."
"Good morning," a calm voice answered.
"This is Arthur Vance."
Linda froze.
She assumed someone was playing a joke.
"I'm sorry... who?"
"Arthur Vance."
There was a brief pause.
"I'd like to thank you personally."
Linda looked around the office in disbelief.
"For what?"
"For refusing to stop caring about this company when others stopped caring about you."
She had no answer.
Arthur continued.
"I've spent the last week reading your performance evaluations."
Linda smiled awkwardly.
"I was just doing my job."
"No."
Arthur replied gently.
"You were doing far more than your job."
Later that afternoon, Arthur visited the regional office without advance notice.
Instead of meeting executives first, he walked directly to Linda's workstation.
Every employee watched in stunned silence as the company's founder extended his hand.
"Ms. Brooks."
Linda stood quickly.
"Sir..."
Arthur smiled warmly.
"I've wanted to meet one of the people who kept this company alive while leadership was busy convincing itself it already knew everything."
Nearby managers lowered their eyes.
For years they had overlooked the same employee now being thanked by the founder himself.
Margaret watched quietly from across the room.
