Chapter 37 - The Call from Chicago
That evening, Margaret's encrypted phone vibrated.
The caller identification displayed only one word.
Secure.
She answered immediately.
"This is Hale."
A familiar voice responded.
"I've been following your investigation."
Margaret recognized the speaker at once.
It was Judge Eleanor Walsh, a retired federal mediator who had worked with Margaret on several corporate ethics investigations years earlier.
"Eleanor."
"I wish I were calling with good news."
Margaret stepped away from the others.
"What happened?"
"I searched for the leadership foundation you mentioned."
"And?"
"It officially dissolved seventeen years ago."
Margaret frowned.
"That's not surprising."
"It should be."
Judge Walsh lowered her voice.
"Because the foundation never actually conducted leadership training."
Margaret stopped walking.
"What do you mean?"
"I found tax filings."
Silence.
"The foundation had almost no employees."
"No permanent office."
"No educational staff."
"No public programs."
Margaret felt a chill.
"Then what was it?"
"I don't know."
"But I do know this."
Judge Walsh paused before continuing.
"Nearly every corporation connected to that foundation later experienced remarkably similar changes in executive culture."
Margaret looked through the hotel window at the city lights below.
The investigation had started with one humiliating interview.
It had uncovered hidden committees, intercepted letters, forgotten archives, and decades of manipulated leadership decisions.
Now it appeared that Vance Dynamics might not have been the only company affected.
