Chapter 21 - An Unexpected Resignation
The following morning began with a surprise.
Before Margaret's team arrived at the regional office, an email circulated among senior executives.
Effective immediately, Regional HR Director Melissa Carter has submitted her resignation.
No explanation.
No farewell message.
No transition plan.
Steven Grant stared at the announcement in disbelief. Melissa had worked for the company for nearly eighteen years. She had always appeared calm under pressure and had never hinted that she intended to leave.
Margaret read the email without changing her expression.
"Find her," she told one of the investigators.
"Do you think she's running?"
"I don't know," Margaret replied. "But people rarely resign overnight when everything appears normal."
Within two hours, the team learned that Melissa had not gone home. Instead, she had checked into a small hotel nearly forty miles away.
When Margaret met her that afternoon, Melissa looked exhausted.
"I knew this day would come," she admitted quietly.
"You've been expecting our investigation?"
Melissa nodded.
"For years."
She placed a thick envelope on the table.
"I copied these documents a long time ago."
Margaret carefully opened it.
Inside were promotion recommendations, internal objections, handwritten notes, and confidential memoranda that had never entered the official archive.
Many carried approval signatures.
Some had been altered after final review.
Others had disappeared from the electronic system entirely.
Melissa looked down.
"I kept telling myself I'd speak up tomorrow."
She smiled sadly.
"Tomorrow became five years."
Margaret closed the envelope.
"The important thing is that you decided today."
For the first time since the investigation began, someone from management had voluntarily brought evidence instead of waiting for it to be discovered.
