Chapter 9 - The Second Recording

The silence after Emily's testimony lasted only a few seconds, but to Daniel Ross it felt like an eternity.
Arthur Vance folded his hands and looked toward Margaret.
"Is that all?"
Margaret answered calmly.
"No."
She reached into her folder once more and removed a small encrypted drive.
"I expected today's discussion to focus heavily on a single interview. Unfortunately, that interview was only the latest example."
The room grew even quieter.
She connected the drive to the presentation system.
A new title appeared.
CONFIDENTIAL LEADERSHIP OBSERVATION — SIX MONTH SUMMARY
Daniel frowned.
"Six months?"
Margaret nodded.
"Before applying for the director position, I accepted a temporary consulting assignment under another name through one of your external vendors."
Several executives exchanged startled looks.
"I attended meetings."
"I observed hiring discussions."
"I reviewed anonymous employee surveys."
"I interviewed former managers who resigned."
Another slide appeared.
Dozens of photographs.
Conference rooms.
Training sessions.
Leadership retreats.
Department meetings.
Daniel suddenly recognized several of them.
"You were there..."
"I was," Margaret replied.
"You simply never noticed me."
Arthur slowly leaned back.
"Please continue."
Margaret pressed another key.
Audio recordings began playing.
Managers joking that experienced employees were "too expensive."
Department heads describing applicants over fifty as "high maintenance."
Executives discussing how younger teams created a "better company image."
No single statement seemed devastating.
Together, they formed an unmistakable pattern.
Margaret looked around the room.
"Culture is never created by one decision."
"It is created by thousands of small decisions that leaders believe nobody will remember."
Daniel lowered his eyes.

For the first time in years, he realized every careless sentence he had spoken had quietly become evidence.
And someone had been listening.
