Chapter 4 - The Chairman's Silent Request

Nearly six months earlier...

Arthur Vance, the eighty-one-year-old founder of Vance Dynamics, sat alone inside his private office overlooking the city skyline.

The company's profits had reached record highs.

Investors were pleased.

Share prices continued climbing.

Yet Arthur wasn't smiling.

Something was wrong.

Employee complaints were quietly increasing.

Experienced staff kept resigning.

Internal surveys painted an unusually positive picture, yet anonymous letters described a workplace built on fear, favoritism, and arrogance.

The numbers no longer matched reality.

He needed someone nobody inside the company would recognize.

Someone impossible to manipulate.

Someone capable of seeing what executives carefully hid.

There had only been one name.

Margaret Hale.

Years earlier, Margaret had quietly saved another corporation from total collapse—not through layoffs or publicity, but by exposing leadership failures that financial statements never revealed.

Arthur still remembered their first meeting.

She had said one sentence he never forgot.

"A company's greatest risk is never poor performance. It's leadership that believes it's beyond accountability."

Now, sitting across from Arthur once again, Margaret had listened carefully.

"You want me to apply as an ordinary candidate?" she asked.

Arthur nodded.

"I want to know how my company treats people before it knows who they are."

Margaret had smiled slightly.

"If they recognize me?"

"They won't."

"And if your executives fail?"

Arthur remained silent for several seconds.

Finally he answered.

"Then they won't be my executives much longer."

...

That promise echoed in Margaret's mind as she reviewed the recording from today's interview.

Every sentence.

Every interruption.

Every dismissive laugh.

She wasn't gathering revenge.

May you like

She was gathering truth.

And truth was always far more dangerous.
