Registration cards.
Hotel invoices.
Airport transportation logs.
Photographs.
Conference catering records.
Most documents had deteriorated beyond recognition, but when they were combined, a clearer picture began to emerge.
Thirty-one registered attendees.
Only twenty-seven had ever appeared in official company records afterward.
Three names had already been identified.
The thirty-first remained blank.
Not erased.
Never entered.
The registration number existed.
The hotel room existed.
Meals had been billed.
Transportation had been arranged.
Yet the guest's identity field contained only one handwritten instruction:
Handled Separately.
Arthur stared at the notation.
"I've never seen administrative records like this."
Margaret quietly replied,
"Neither have I."
The forensic accountant traced payment for the mysterious guest.
Cash.
Every expense had been settled in cash before the conference even began.
No reimbursement.
No invoices.
No corporate sponsor.
Someone had attended without leaving a financial footprint.
Samuel looked at the reconstruction board.
"I remember one empty chair during the opening session."
Margaret turned toward him.
"Empty?"
Samuel nodded.
"It wasn't empty because nobody came."
He paused.
"It stayed empty because everyone knew it belonged to someone arriving later."
The investigation had uncovered another invisible participant.
