Two days later, an unexpected package arrived from a university archive in London.
No one on Margaret's team had requested it.
Inside was a digitized reel-to-reel recording accompanied by a short note.
> Your inquiry reached us before your letter did.
The recording began with applause inside an academic lecture hall.
A lecturer introduced a guest simply as "Professor Kensington."
Margaret immediately looked up.
"Evelyn?"
The audio technician shook his head.
"The introduction doesn't specify."
A calm voice began speaking.
Unlike the commanding tone recovered from earlier conference recordings, this voice sounded reflective.
> Organizations do not fail because they choose the wrong leaders.
A pause.
> They fail because they stop teaching future leaders how to question inherited assumptions.
Arthur leaned forward.
"That's completely different."
Judge Walsh agreed.
"It contradicts the philosophy found in the altered manuals."
The lecture continued.
The speaker warned repeatedly against creating systems that rewarded conformity over judgment.
Samuel smiled sadly.
"If Harold had heard this version..."
Margaret finished the thought.
"...he might never have believed the Network intended harm."
Someone had taken a philosophy of stewardship...
...and gradually transformed it into a philosophy of control.
