Chapter 54 - The Locked Door

Construction workers carefully removed the outer panel.
Behind it appeared a steel security door coated in dust.
No office number.
No company logo.
Only an obsolete electronic lock manufactured nearly twenty-two years earlier.
The facilities manager looked astonished.
"This shouldn't exist."
Arthur stepped forward slowly.
"I designed this floor."
He ran his hand across the cold metal.
"I've never seen this door."
The lock no longer accepted modern access cards.
An engineer bypassed the aging control system while cybersecurity specialists documented every step.
Finally, the mechanism clicked.
The heavy door opened only a few inches before stopping.
Boxes blocked it from the inside.
After clearing the entrance, investigators stepped into complete darkness.
Emergency lights illuminated the forgotten room.
Dust covered every surface.
Computers.
Filing cabinets.
Shelves.
A conference table still surrounded by empty chairs.
It looked as though everyone had simply walked away one evening and never returned.
Margaret slowly entered.
Nothing had been disturbed for almost two decades.
A whiteboard remained covered with handwritten notes.
Most had faded.
One sentence, however, remained perfectly readable.
Leadership is inherited long before it is announced.
Arthur closed his eyes.
He had heard similar wording repeatedly throughout the investigation.

Now he was standing inside the room where those ideas may have first taken shape.
